One Day
*This activity only works after Culture Activity #1 has been done first.*
Step 1:
List as many books or stories you can think of written by or containing characters of ethnicities other than white. |
Step 2:
Compile a classroom list of titles broken down by ethnicity:

Step 3:
Class discussion around what observations students can make about the compiled list? |
Step 4:
Students analyze the chart below and answer the questions next to the chart. |
Step 5:
Have students discuss responses with a partner and lead a whole class discussion. |
Observations in Publishing
The information below was published by the Cooperative Children's Book Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Book Center has been tracking the diversity in book publications since 1984. In 1995, the Center moved from tracking solely African American authors to all ethnicities. Use the chart below to answer the questions.
