How do I use it?Move through the tabs below from left to right. Use all lessons or select lessons to build background on culture, Walter Dean Myers, and Harlem. Then read all or select stories from 145th Street and use/adapt lesson plans as you see fit.

What will I find in each tab?
Through this tab, you will explore the deeper meaning of culture. It is important to reflect on culture in your own life through this tab before discussing with students.The information on this tab forms the thread of all lesson plans on this site.

This tab offers lesson plans teaching students about culture through inductive reasoning. Culture Activity #1 is a must do in utilizing this website, but all other culture activities can be used as you see fit.

This tab builds background knowledge of Walter Dean Myers as well as of Harlem. Through this tab, students will have a better understanding of the setting of the stories in 145th Street as well as Myers' purpose in writing them.

My name is Jonathon Wyman. I am a 7th grade English teacher at Shakopee West Junior High in Shakopee, Minnesota. Before joining my current school in 2011, I taught 9th through 12th grade English in several diverse settings. In addition to teaching, I run the after school program for students with needs in math and reading. Through my experiences in education, I have built a passion for making school meaningful for every student. Currently, I am also finishing my Masters in Education at the University of Minnesota; thus, I have created this website to further my knowledge of how to utilize multicultural literature as a bridge for students in school.
